Blossoming Bridgwater

Blossoming Bridgwater is a collaborative fashion and textiles project that invites the local community to join a series of open workshops and contribute directly to creating an original stunning, multilayered skirt. This unique piece will reflect the Bridgwater communitys' collective thoughts and feelings on their environment.

To enhance this celebratory design, we are planning to hold a gala event (which you're all invited to - details to come soon) to combine other creative artforms such as music (with more in the pipeline) to make this project grow and grow...

Open to all, Blossoming Bridgwater aims to break down barriers to the arts, making them accessible and relatable while fostering creativity and connection. Led by Chloë Haywood, who has worked for over 15 years upcycling and repurposing textiles and is so looking forward to sharing her skills with you.

Everyone is welcome (of all skills) to come and leave their mark on this original and very unique project!

The Removed (Screening Plus Q&A)

The Removed is a short film shot locally in West Melbury, starring Call The Midwife’s Georgie Glen and Bridgerton’s Tom Christian.

In England and Wales between 1949 and 1976, 185,000 babies were removed from their mostly young unmarried mothers. The film examines the lifelong effects of forced adoption and one woman’s search for a lost past.

Writer and Director, Rebecca Rose says: “I have been working with an incredible group who are campaigning for a formal apology from the UK government for the part it played in the historic injustice of forced adoption. Some of these women will be joining us at the screening.”

You can find out more here.

Run time: 10 minutes. After the film has been shown there will be a Q&A with the director and crew members.

Tickets: Free, but please book your seat using the link below. Age 12+

‘Pull My Thread’ Exhibition by Blue Patch

An exhibition of sustainable textiles from Blue Patch, the UK’s Sustainable Business Community.

The exhibition captures the creative spirit of the new green economy and the ethos of Blue Patch’s collection of sustainable businesses. From couture to hand weave, upcycling to bio-textiles, 24 makers and creatives will examine the relationship betweensustainability and our new, green ‘collaborative’ economy.

Blue Patch members will exhibit innovative ways to produce sustainable textiles aimed at creating industry and environmental change. Displays include everything from a new bio fleece harvested from bulrushes to radical couture created from textiles donated by the Royal Opera House.

Allan Brown’s iconic Nettle Dress and short film, demonstrating the philosophy of slow spinning and weaving, will be on display alongside a small handbag, or reticule, that belonged to John Ruskin’s mother, Margaret (1781 – 1871). The bag’s elegant knotwork was expertly knitted from plant fibres and embroidered with coloured flowers.

Howard Hull, Director of Brantwood, commented:

“Ruskin reminds manufacturers that the things they make and how they make them determines the nature of everyone’s world. The attention to thoughtful manufacture by Blue Patch makers makes them champions of social justice and environmental responsibility. That they achieve this by creating products of inspiring beauty is all the more remarkable. We are delighted to have Blue Patch at Brantwood.”

Blue Patch founder and the exhibition curator, Jane Langley notes:

“Reading Ruskin’s ‘Unto This Last’ is like chatting with an old friend. I like to think he would ‘get Blue Patch’ because 100% of our revenue is dedicated to educating and supporting the growth of the local sustainable economy in the UK and Ireland. I would give anything to discuss our mission with Ruskin himself – maybe as we gazed across the lake at Old Man of Coniston from the terrace at Brantwood!
